課程概述

Course Description

This course is a practice-based training designed to help students learn the techniques necessary for translating texts dealing with culture, history and philosophy into Chinese/English and is recommended for students in both the translation and interpretation tracks.

課程目標
Course Objectives

To help students learn the techniques for translating culture, history and philosophy texts into **Chinese/English**

課程要求
Classes will be conducted as follows:
(1) A weekly translation exercise of about 800-1000 words/characters long. At least 13 exercises during the term.
(2) Source-language texts will include select articles on culture, history and philosophy. Hand-outs or relevant online links will be given to students for prior reading before doing their translation assignments.
(3) Weekly translation projects submitted by students will be discussed in class, including analysis of mistranslations, omissions, corrections and improvements.
(4) Emphasis of student-work analysis: accuracy, grammar, diction, vocabulary, tone, language register, style and format.
(5) Students will be regularly assigned to study and comment on the work of their classmates as a means to learn others’ adopted techniques, as well as consider their pros and cons, in comparison with their own work.
(6) As a way to develop speed, students will at times be required to do translation of short passages on-site, to be followed by a review of their work.
(8) Students will sit for their mid-term and final exams.
(9) Students will be required to compile a glossary of terms based on the assigned exercises, to be submitted by the end of the semester.

Requirements: This course is exclusive for graduate-level students in the T&I Program. Priority for enrollment, however, will be given to students in the Translation Section.

Note: This course will most of the time involve a thorough discussion of select passages from student work. Students will therefore be expected to participate in the discussion, raise questions or offer their views on specific passages from their own work or those of their classmates. While it is encouraged to take down notes using their laptops or consult Internet sources in class, students are not allowed to spend time Internet surfing or doing other things unrelated to class, such as reading other materials, writing reports and the like. Class participation will be 40% of the final grade. Deductions arising from untoward behaviour as mentioned above may mean a failing grade. ***If you are not inclined to comply, please do not select this course***
